    Checking Your Gas Appliances

    Last updated 1 year ago

When using gas appliances, safety should be your top priority. Any fuel-burning appliances, including stoves, furnaces, water heaters, clothes dryers, and gas fireplaces, should be routinely checked to ensure that they burn propane gas cleanly and aren’t allowing gas to escape into your home. Watch this video to learn what to look for in various appliances.

Check your gas range for a consistent blue flame that ignites quickly. Yellow flames and sputtering are signs that your range isn’t burning gas properly and needs cleaning. In addition, inspect any furnaces and water heaters that use pilot lights and burners. Again, you want to see a uniform blue flame. Be sure to keep up on routine maintenance such as changing air filters to keep airflow smooth.

Keeping Your Home Safe This Winter

    Last updated 1 year ago

Using propane gas is a great way to save money on utilities this winter and to enjoy a clean-burning fuel that lessens your impact on the environment. Because many homes increase their usage of propane in the cooler months, it’s important to familiarize yourself with propane safety awareness and practices. With the right knowledge, you and your family can safely use propane gas for all your heating needs this winter.

    General Propane Safety

Always respect propane gas and your equipment, which includes your propane appliances and storage tanks. Periodically check your connections to ensure they’re tight, and familiarize yourself with the odor of propane with the assistance of your propane company. They will often have samples of the odorant that is used to make propane detectable by the human nose. If at any time you experience a scent like rotten eggs or other foul substance, immediately vacate the area. Extinguish open flames if you can, and call your propane company right away.

It’s important to understand the risk that carbon monoxide can present to homeowners using propane gas or any other combustible fuel. Propane appliances, as with any fuel-burning appliance, produce CO as a part of combustion. Normally, this odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas is vented safely away from your home, but a damaged appliance or improper ventilation can cause this gas to present a very real safety risk. Have your propane equipment and appliances checked over by a qualified propane company at least annually for safety, and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

    Routine Maintenance

Never let your propane tank run dry—always have it refilled by a propane company before you hit empty. It’s a good idea to err on the side of caution and refill your tank earlier than necessary rather than misread a gauge and end up with an empty tank. A quality propane company will also check your propane system for leaks before reactivating your gas after a refill or maintenance. This is required by law in many states.
