Propane is a highly efficient and environmentally friendly gas that is unique among fossil fuels. In its native state, propane is not harmful to the environment, and the exhaust gases created by combustion are not classified as greenhouse gases. Using propane is an excellent way to save energy and money for many households. Educating yourself about propane can help you understand its advantages as well as how to use it safely for anything from home heating to powering your most basic appliances.

    Applications for Propane

Propane can be used to power just about anything. Many alternative fuel vehicles use it, especially in commercial fleets. For homeowners, it is most often used for home heating, but other propane appliances that can help increase your energy efficiency and reduce your dependence upon electricity or other fuels. Did you know that propane can power refrigerators and lawnmowers? The range of propane appliances surprises many homeowners, and helps them whether they live in suburban areas or off of the grid.

    Propane Safety

Safely using propane in the home requires homeowners to understand and respond to the signs of a gas leak. Propane, though naturally colorless and odorless, contains an additive called an odorant. If you smell a rotten egg odor in your home, you may be detecting this odorant—meaning that gas is leaking into your home. Familiarize yourself with the shutoff valve on all propane containers or appliances, and always remember that propane is flammable. Never smoke or use open flame near propane appliances or tanks. Store small propane cylinders upright and closed, and have your residential propane tank serviced and inspected regularly by a qualified propane delivery company.

Using propane while on the road in your RV is a great way to save power. It’s important to understand basic safety practices for transporting, switching, and otherwise handling your propane cylinders.

This video shows how to switch out an empty cylinder for a full one and how to transport an empty cylinder safely. Regulations state that enclosed vehicles can carry up to three 30 pound propane cylinders, provided they are secured properly. It is recommended that they be transported in the back of a pickup or using special holders on your recreational vehicle rather than inside a vehicle such as a car or station wagon. In the summertime, or when it’s hot outside the temperature can increase the pressure inside the tank which can result in the pressure relief valve opening. Do not store propane tanks inside of an enclosed car.
